Dear Asian-Identifying Women,
IT FEELS IMPORTANT TO SHARE
My mother is from Singapore via southern China. They think Guangdong. My father is third generation Japanese-American. His parents, my paternal grandparents, were in the internment camps during WWII. My uncle, my dad’s brother, was born in “camp” as they called it. My great aunt, my dad’s aunt, was honored at a Dodger’s game as the oldest living internment camp survivor at 110 years old (!). You can read more about her here if you’re curious. And if you scroll down, I'm in the big family pic in the far right with the sunglasses (!). Too cool for skool, but also didn't realize that they would submit this pic for Today.com!
THE LONGING IN BELONGING
I struggled to belong most of my life. Growing up in Hong Kong, I was not HK-ese enough, British enough, nor American enough. Although I had a US passport, I only really ever spent summers visiting my paternal grandparents in LA. Attending boarding school in California, I quickly dropped my British accent to fit in. It wasn’t really until undergrad at UCSD that I finally felt like I could be more of me.
HOW FAMILY CONSTELLATIONS FOUND ME
They say in this work that you don’t find the work, the work finds you. An early onset dementia diagnosis for my mom, and an ensuing 2.5 year depression for me. I traveled the globe to find the best alternative healing modalities, trying 25 different modalities, and doing some weird sh*t. Along the way, Family Constellations found me. By then, I had done significant healing work: working WITH a Theta Healing practitioner for 2.5 years, eventually getting certified in Theta Healing. I then decided to get certified to certify others, and get certified in integrative hypnosis as well. Then Family Constellations knocked on the house of my soul and said, “There’s more to acknowledge and heal,” extending a gentle, encouraging, loving hand. I’ve not looked back since.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT AS HEALING
Trying to co-create community WITH other Asian-identifying women both in Asia and in the U.S. hasn’t been easy. Admittedly, it feels important to share and acknowledge that I have some lingering PTSD from not being accepted into these communities: Not Asian enough, not American enough, not ______ enough.
BE-ING THE ONLY ASIAN-IDENTIFYING WOMAN IN THE ROOM
Before my depression, I was delivering Happiness workshops around the globe. I know, ironic, right? I was also often the only Asian-identifying woman in the room, on stages, at tables. The same was true moving into higher level coaching masterminds, women millionaire spaces, and Family Constellations conferences both abroad and in the U.S. I realized, if I continued to hide, play small, not bring out my deepest and perhaps our deepest community offering together, I’d continue to miss what was going on in the Field*: ALL OF YOUUUUUUUUU.
*The Field: Bert Hellinger, the German psycho-analyst who found Family Constellations in the 1990s coined the term “The Field.” He even admitted that it was hard to explain what it is. The closest that he/we can get to explaining it is an energetic force greater than all of us that connects all of us.
THE ASIAN WOMEN’S COLLECTIVE: THE SAFEST, MOST MAGICAL CONTAINER FOR ASIAN-IDENTIFYING WOMEN SEEKING MAGICAL MIRACLE-Y RESULTS IN THEIR LIVES
I’ve always wanted to co-create community WITH other Asian-identifying women, but given my own PTSD, I worried:
-Would other Asian-identifying women want to be in community WITH me?
-Would I be Asian enough?
-Would I be too out there spiritually?
Then I heard my first Family Constellations trainer’s voice in my head. When I first got certified and was scared to step into my role as a Family Constellations facilitator, she asked, “Don't you wanna grow as a facilitator?” I nodded hesitantly. Then she continued and said, “If you look at yourself and your own fear/insecurities, you’re going to miss what’s going on in the Field.”
Whew. Drop the Family Constellations mic.
All of this to say, even if we never meet, even if you just stopped by to say "hi", even if this has just growth-spired you a little, know that you are NOT alone. You never have been. You have a tribe of ancestors behind you rooting for you. That's your tribe.
And if you want to experience that IRL? We've got you.
I love youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu. See you in the Field.
Pink and furry huggies for now,
Kylaaaaaaaaa
