The WITH Communication Pyramid:
MYSELF
Everything starts WITH you (!). Have you ever noticed the way you communicate WITH yourself? Do you often beat yourself up over things you should have done or could have done differently? Well, start by communicating WITH Yourself in a positive manner. Tell yourself something awesome you did today WITH yourself. Once that foundation of communicating WITH yourself is strong, you can move up the pyramid to one-on-one conversations, eventually groups, and then toxic people.
P.S. The average human has 60,000 thoughts/day, of which 80% are negative, and 95% are recurring. Try to come up with one positive thought for every negative thought you have in your conversation WITH yourself.
ONE-ON-ONE
Do you check your phone, text, or tune out while communicating WITH someone else? What if you actually gave that person your full attention? What if you made that person felt heard, understood, and important while doing that? That is the art of communicating WITH someone one-on-one.
GROUPS
One of the most challenging things to do is engage and communicate WITH a group of people. How can you make sure you are communicating WITH not just one person, but two, three, four, or even hundreds of people? The key is to focus on the group rather than focus on yourself. Are they bored? Are you talking too much? If so, start by asking some questions. A good one to start WITH is: "What do you think?" Crazy how just four words can take a conversation from AT -> WITH (!).
TOXIC PEOPLE
This is by far one of the most challenging groups to master communication WITH. A Harvard Business Review article noted that the average amount of money it costs an organization per year, per toxic person is USD$ 12,500! Beyond the financial cost, there is a ton of mental cost as well. So, how do we master the tip of the WITH Communication Pyramid? Well, the key is finding a way to elevate both you and that toxic person.
